I build software, teach technology, and make complicated things easier to understand.
I’m Hossein Erfani, a software engineer based in Sweden. My work brings together software engineering, AI, systems integration, automation and education.
I like understanding messy processes and finding ways to make them simpler with software.
That tendency started a long time ago.
Rasht, northern Iran / 1993
It started with a Commodore 64.
In 1993, in Rasht in northern Iran, I walked into a small computer classroom with a few Commodore 64s connected to black-and-white televisions.
I remember the fascination of writing instructions and watching a machine actually follow them.
Those early experiments with programming were enough. I was hooked.
What interested me then is still what interests me now: turning an idea or a set of instructions into something that actually works.

A journey through software
1993
The first instruction.
Commodore 64. Black-and-white television. My first encounter with programming.
Software Engineering
Learning to engineer software.
I studied Software Engineering and went deeper into programming, algorithms, data structures and the principles behind building software.
Master’s studies
AI and learning systems.
My master’s studies in Software Engineering brought computing and learning together.
My thesis focused on student modelling in Intelligent Tutoring Systems using a Case-Based Reasoning approach.
More than two decades later, AI and education would become part of my work again.
Teaching in Iran
Teaching and building.
For many years in Iran, teaching was a major part of my professional life.
Alongside teaching, I built smaller software tools for practical university needs using Delphi and FoxPro.
The technology has changed considerably since then. The motivation has not.
Find a real problem. Build something useful.
Sweden
A new chapter.
I moved to Sweden.
Soon afterwards, I worked as a web developer at a small company and moved deeper into web technologies.
Karlstad University
Small problems. Larger systems.
I joined Karlstad University, where small technical problems quickly turned into larger systems.
- A form needed better logic.
- A workflow needed automation.
- Two systems needed to exchange information.
- Someone was repeatedly doing something software could do instead.
And one solution led to another.

Some are small utilities solving one specific problem. Others became integrations, workflow systems, administrative applications and AI-powered tools.

I look for predictable work where software can reduce effort while leaving judgement and responsibility with people.

Teaching & technical communication
Teaching changed the way I build.
I’ve taught technical subjects including Programming Languages, Data Structures, Algorithm Design, Web Development and WordPress.
Teaching has shaped my technical work:
Understanding something complicated is one skill. Explaining it simply is another.
Whether I’m talking with developers, teachers, administrators or managers, I try to make the technical parts understandable without making them inaccurate.
That matters when building software too.
People need to understand what a system does, why it works that way, and what decisions remain theirs.
The story continues
Still building.
More than thirty years after that first encounter with a computer, I still get much the same satisfaction from making a machine do something useful.
The tools are different now.
The problems are bigger.
And there is still plenty of repetitive work left to eliminate.
